Blog Tour Review: Flukes by Nichole Chase

Flukes by Nichole Chase
Synopsis: Meena has a secret guarded closely by her family—a secret as dangerous as the sea and buried just as deep. When court-appointed community-service workers are assigned to Flukes, the family-owned animal sanctuary, everyone is on high alert. It doesn’t help that Meena finds herself attracted to sexy-as-sin Blake Weathering, one of the new workers. If he wasn’t so distracting, she might be able to land Flukes a much-needed cruise-line contract.

Blake Weathering, the first in his family to attend public school, has developed a tough image. Unfortunately, it lands him in trouble. Now banned from his high school graduation ceremony, getting his diploma is dependent upon a community-service gig cleaning up fish crap. No diploma, no trust fund fortune—and no way to escape his overbearing father. The last thing he needs is the distraction of a mysterious girl with teal eyes who pulls at his heartstrings.

When Blake discovers Meena’s secret, they are both thrown into a desperate search for information about her past. Two worlds pull them in opposite directions, and they will have to fight to hold on to all that really matters.

My Review:
I received Flukes by Nichole Chase from the publisher for a blog tour and this is my honest review!

Before reading this book, I had never read anything that involved a mermaid. But I am glad this was the first one I chose to read because it was light, airy, and easy to follow. Do not take that the wrong way though. Some would say that makes for a boring book, but there were plenty of surprises and entertaining aspects of this book. I practically read it in one sitting.

Flukes, is about a couple who while on their boat in the ocean come across a few dolphins that presented them with the unfortunate dead body of a mermaid. With the body, came a baby that the couple was not quite sure of. The two decided to take her in and raise her as their own. This child ended up being our main character Meena.

To start of, I love how they incorporated her being a mermaid into the story. At first when Chase had Meena in the water I was thinking she was going to change. But then she did not, and she got out and did other things for the day. I was confused because I thought she was going to change every time she got in the water and that she could not control it. Fact is, she can control it and she does not need to change every time she gets into the water. This, I realized made for a better story because she could control when she wanted to show someone. For instance, the other main character Blake.

Chase did a wonderful job incorporating many different aspects into the story. A couple of examples of that are. She had the romance of Blake and Meena but it certainly was not love at first sight like a lot of other books have their characters. They seemed to fall into it naturally which I liked a lot. The author also, threw in a fair amount of drama that could have caused for trouble but was resolved before it got too out of hand. She even was able to add a very intimate moment between Meena and Jalla when Jalla gave birth to her little boy. The book in all was beautifully written, and I am excited to read more by Nichole Chase in the future.
