Excerpt:
“LOOK OUT!” she screamed, pointing to the front window.
A black figure stood in the beam of our headlights. I slammed my foot on the brakes, but they locked and the car began to skid. The smell of burning rubber filled the car as we screeched across the asphalt. The man didn’t move, and as we neared him, I cranked the wheel to the right as fast as possible to avoid him. We screamed as the car spun out of control.
As we skidded closer to the unmoving figure, I thought he was done for. I expected him to bounce up onto the windshield and shatter the window into thousands of tiny pieces. But the briefest second before impact, my door rushing directly at him, I saw—
It was not a man.

Review: Joyride by Anna Banks

Joyride by Anna Banks
Publisher: Feiwel & Friends
Release Date: June 2, 2015
Book Format: Hardcover
# of Pages: 288
Synopsis: A popular guy and a shy girl with a secret become unlikely accomplices for midnight pranking, and are soon in over their heads—with the law and with each other—in this sparkling standalone from NYT-bestselling author Anna Banks.

It’s been years since Carly Vega’s parents were deported. She lives with her brother, studies hard, and works at a convenience store to contribute to getting her parents back from Mexico.

Arden Moss used to be the star quarterback at school. He dated popular blondes and had fun with his older sister, Amber. But now Amber’s dead, and Arden blames his father, the town sheriff who wouldn’t acknowledge Amber's mental illness. Arden refuses to fulfill whatever his conservative father expects.

All Carly wants is to stay under the radar and do what her family expects. All Arden wants is to NOT do what his family expects. When their paths cross, they each realize they’ve been living according to others. Carly and Arden’s journey toward their true hearts—and one another—is funny, romantic, and sometimes harsh.

My Review:
I borrowed Joyride by Anna Banks from work and this is my honest review.

In Joyride, we meet Carly Vega a teenager living alone with her older brother doing her best to make ends meet, and save enough money to get her parents back from Mexico. Every pay check she receives is handed straight over to her brother to help her parents. Soon she meets Arden, the cute rich boy who likes to have fun.

In the beginning Arden just wants to have fun with Carly. The way the two meet, (during a fake robbery run by Arden) is a little extreme and the way Carly acts intrigues Arden to befriend her. He thinks the two of them would be a nice team. As time goes on Arden starts to fall for Carly and things get interesting from there.

Carly is a really mature, tough girl. I loved her I feel like I can really relate to her. Obviously my parents were not deported, but I started working at a young age as well so I know what it's like to work my butt off at a part time job to pay bills and what not. I also really liked Arden. He was able to get Carly to take a breath and have some fun, which is something we could see she really needed.

The plot of this book was really refreshing. It was intense in that it was two teenagers working hard to get there family back together. But there were times strewn throughout the book that were fun based and I was able to take a breath. I like that in books, and I definitely plan to read more of Anna Banks’ work in the future.

Review: Inside The O'Briens by Lisa Genova

Inside The O'Briens by Lisa Genova
Publisher: Gallery Books
Release Date: April 7, 2015
Book Format: Hardcover
# of Pages: 352
Synopsis: From award-winning, New York Times bestselling author and neuroscientist Lisa Genova comes a powerful new novel that does for Huntington’s Disease what her debut Still Alice did for Alzheimer’s.

Joe O’Brien is a forty-four-year-old police officer from the Irish Catholic neighborhood of Charlestown, Massachusetts. A devoted husband, proud father of four children in their twenties, and respected officer, Joe begins experiencing bouts of disorganized thinking, uncharacteristic temper outbursts, and strange, involuntary movements. He initially attributes these episodes to the stress of his job, but as these symptoms worsen, he agrees to see a neurologist and is handed a diagnosis that will change his and his family’s lives forever: Huntington’s Disease.

Huntington’s is a lethal neurodegenerative disease with no treatment and no cure. Each of Joe’s four children has a 50 percent chance of inheriting their father’s disease, and a simple blood test can reveal their genetic fate. While watching her potential future in her father’s escalating symptoms, twenty-one-year-old daughter Katie struggles with the questions this test imposes on her young adult life. Does she want to know? What if she’s gene positive? Can she live with the constant anxiety of not knowing?

As Joe’s symptoms worsen and he’s eventually stripped of his badge and more, Joe struggles to maintain hope and a sense of purpose, while Katie and her siblings must find the courage to either live a life “at risk” or learn their fate.

Praised for writing that “explores the resilience of the human spirit” (The San Francisco Chronicle), Lisa Genova has once again delivered a novel as powerful and unforgettable as the human insights at its core.

My Review:
I borrowed Inside The O’Briens by Lisa Genova from work and this is my honest review.

After reading Still Alice another of Lisa Genova’s books I just had to pick up anything else she has written. That included picking up her newest, Inside The O’Briens as soon as it released. I enjoy Genova’s books for many reasons. But I think the main reason is because I have always been interested in medical stories and interested in studying diseases for a long time. Reading about these diseases and how they affect families is even more interesting.

Another thing I liked about this book was that it was set in Boston because it is so close to home. I recognized a lot of what the main characters were talking about like the places around Boston, Fenway Park and the Red Sox too of course. These family stories really got to me, throughout the whole book I got to know the family as if they were my own family. I cried when I found out Colleen was pregnant, and got angry every time Patrick did something stupid.

In this book, the disease of choice was Huntingtons. We met the O’Brien family, the man of the house, Joe as well as his wife Rose. Together they had four kids the oldest JJ, then Patrick, Meghan, and Katie. We got to see how this disease affected all of them separately, and together as well. Since their father, Joe was the one diagnosed all four children had a 50-50 chance of getting it. This meant that the whole book was crazy with finding out who had it and who did not. The one person I was really interested in seeing if they had the gene and at the end we did not get to find out. It was so angering but it made the book a little better somehow.

Overall the book was great, not as great as Still Alice but still great enough for me to want to read every other book she has written as well.

Review: Blackmail Boyfriend by Chris Cannon

Synopsis

Sometimes, blackmail is the only weapon a girl has...

Haley Patterson has had a crush on golden boy Bryce Colton for ages. But when she hears a rumor that he hooked up with her she gives him a choice: be her boyfriend for a month to show other guys that she’s dateable—despite her overprotective and very intimidating brothers—or deal with the angry, cage-fighting boyfriend of the girl he actually did hook up with.

Bryce didn’t know the other Haley even had a boyfriend. He was just trying to get his ex off his back. And now, not only is he being blackmailed, he's being blackmailed by an honor student. His new “girlfriend” has two three-legged dogs, her father mows grass at the country club, and she's...well, difficult. And different.

Can something so faketurn into something real?

About the Author

Chris Cannon lives in Southern Illinois with her husband and her three dogs, Pete the shih tzu who sleeps on her desk while she writes, Molly the ever-shedding yellow lab, and Tyson the sandwich-stealing German Shepherd Beagle. She believes coffee is the Elixir of Life. Most evenings after work, you can find her sucking down caffeine and writing fire-breathing paranormal adventures. Going Down In Flames is the first book in Chris Cannon's shape-shifting dragon series.

My Review:
I received Blackmail Boyfriend by Chris Cannon from the publisher for review, and this is my honest opinion.

Blackmail Boyfriend is about a girl named Haley who is having trouble getting a boyfriend when her brothers make it their business to personally scare every guy away from her. When a rumor starts spreading around the school that she slept with the high school hottie she has to do something to kill the rumor fast.

The hottie of the school is referred to as Bryce, and Haley makes a “deal” with him to clear her name and keep her reputation clean. She basically tells him that since it is his fault the rumor is going around that he has to pretend to be her boyfriend for a couple weeks to kill the rumor and make her seem dateable to other guys.

This book was incredibly interesting. I have read tons of sappy romance, love at first sight kind of books but this was the complete opposite. It was entertaining to watch Bryce struggle with his feelings for Haley that whether he wanted or not were creeping up on him. It was also sweet to see Haley’s best friend Jane to get together with Bryce’s best friend Nathan. I was not sure how that was going to pan out in the beginning but what did happen was on a happy note.

There was no one emotion in this book, it was very much an emotional rollercoaster for Haley and Bryce. But hey, that is what makes a relationship and that is also what made them seem very real to me. I flew through this story a lot faster than I thought I would and that is simply because the plot, and the characters pulled me in and did not let me go until the last sentence had ended. I am very excited to read others books by this author in the near future!

Excerpt:
Anxiety ran its swift edge through her stomach without warning as she turned to gaze across the lake and into the surrounding dense forest.
Someone is watching me. I wish I could see through the trees. They could be anywhere.
She rubbed her hand down the length of her arm. There was no movement, except for the gentle swaying of the trees as the early dawn breeze rustled their needles and thick, green leaves. She turned forward, but the uneasy feeling didn’t pass. Someone was watching her. The chestnut brown hairs on the back of her neck, just under her long ponytail, prickled.
Evil is on the prowl, waiting for the right moment to pounce on me.
Bringing her knees to her chest, a ripple of fear dotted her spine, making her skin crawl. The first time she had experienced this feeling was in May, the week school had ended for summer break. The rumors about two girls who had gone missing stayed in the back of her mind. It wasn’t unusual for girls to run off from the small town of Mayrose, Arkansas. They would most likely be found in Little Rock, sad and miserable because city life hadn’t turned out the way they had thought it would. But so far, no one had been able to track down the two latest missing girls. That was unusual.

Guest Post:
I love trying to integrate music into my writing. I feel like the two arts are so similar that it should be an easy task. However, when I try to put a playlist to a book, it’s so much harder to pick just ten songs to fit an entire book. It’s nearly impossible to take your own tastes out of the matter and focus on lyrics and what fits. I think that’s what makes it so much fun.

When I write, I need complete silence to focus. However, once I start editing, the music turns up and inspires me to add to scenes. Whenever I find a song that fits a mood or a phrase or a chapter, I jot it down. An example is when I first started writing For The Love of Ash a song popped on the radio and it actually inspired a lot of who Maggie’s character is. The song was Human, by Christina Perri. If you’ve heard the song, you know how powerful those lyrics are.

Has this happened to anyone else? Have you ever felt so inspired by a song that you did something spectacular? While songs have this power, I think books do as well. A character can resonate with someone and make you want to change. A scene could change your view on something and your life is forever different.

Here are some of the songs (my playlist) that inspired me to write For The Love of Ash. They go in order of the flow of the book so just from the songs you can kind of see the arc of the story and the hardships on the characters. What songs inspire you? What do you think fits with the book? If this were turned into a movie, could you see these on a soundtrack?

Excerpt from RED BLOODED

With the flood of more people outside of the Wawa, and even more phones attached to Instagram and Pinterest and god knows what else, there isn’t time to think. There’s only time to act. I brush against Dylan, fear gurgling in my stomach. What if he doesn’t get it? What if he doesn’t want to play along? “Dylan, promise me you’ll keep looking at me as I say this.” His eyes dart up. “What?” “Just, don’t look anywhere else,” I say, as I approach him, our bodies almost touching. “People recognized me.” He jitters, about to look around, but he stops himself. His attention is all on me. “Yeah,” he says, voice low. “Remember how you told me that in politics we need to make the story our own. Make it something positive?” I close the gap between us, my body pressing against his. He stiffens, but only at first, then his breaths grow deep. He nods. “Yeah.” “This is me making my own story.” My palms glide over his knuckles. I press down on his wrists to help leverage myself up as I stand on my tiptoes. I bring my face closer and closer to his, until our lips touch. I move, but barely, running my mouth along his. His mouth opens, and together, our breaths connect. We stay there, not moving past the lip-touching, until he lowers his head. His hands fly around my hips. He pulls at me, pressing my belly into his pelvis as his lips come down hard. His tongue slips into my mouth, tender and curious. I reach my hands around his neck, pressing my breasts against him. His right hand reaches just under the back of my shirt, and his fingers press against my lower spine as his left hand scoops my neck, ensuring my mouth stays with him. Ensuring our tongues and lips can stay together, caressing and connecting. His thumb rubs against the sensitive part under my ear. I arch my back as he holds me close. I’m ready to relinquish everything to him. Just as I’m wanting his hands to skid all over me, just as I’m wanting his mouth to never leave mine again, he draws back. He looks down and swallows. I hold on tighter as his hands glide to my upper arms. We’re both catching our breath as we stare at each other. Then he looks to the crowd that I realize, belatedly, has been joyously catcalling from the Wawa doors. He leans to the side of me that they can’t see. His warm breath blows against my ear. “That was just for show?” he asks. I mumble something and try to nod my head. Up. Down. “Okay.” He lets me go and climbs into the driver’s seat faster than I thought possible. Especially now. My legs feel like Jell-O, my mind feels like something even less solid than Jell-O. I look up in a haze. He opens the door a sliver. The familiar, gruff, Dylan voice is back. “You coming?”
